6 Signs You’re On the Right Track in Life
Over time, our busy modern lifestyles can begin to feel a little…routine.
Woken the kids up? Check. Remembered to eat brekky? Check. Got to work on time? Check.
And then in the evenings, all we might have energy for is our favourite show on Netflix and a glass or two of pinot.
It eventually gets to the point where you might ask yourself: is this what I really want out of life? Am I heading to where I want to be in 5 years’ time?
Yep…those big existential questions do catch up with us in the end. No matter how hard we try to distract ourselves in the everyday.
This is why it’s useful to set goals, check in with yourself, and always follow your dreams and desires. After all, life is an adventure and no one wants to be stuck on repeat!
Here are 6 subtle signs that you’re on the right track:
1) You enjoy healthy relationships
There’s always going to be that one friend or sibling who gets on your nerves, but most of your relationships should be positive.
If you find that you’re avoiding your family, friends or your significant other, it could be time to figure out why. Loneliness is one of the biggest signs that you’re beginning to withdraw– something you want to avoid for the sake of your mental health and your overall life satisfaction.
If there’s a particularly toxic relationship in your life, it’s probably high time you air it out before it eats you up. It could be detracting more energy from you than you realise. The people closest to you in your life should act as your support network and uplift you – not bring you down.
2) You know what makes you tick
What are you truly passionate about in life? What gets you out of bed in the morning? If you know the answers to these questions, congratulations! Your life has value and meaning in it, because you understand what’s important to you and why.
Even if your life doesn’t directly involve your passions just yet, by simply defining them you’ll at least have a good starting point for where you want to go next. Whether it’s a foreign country or a different career path, you can then start working on a plan and get ever closer to living your dream life.
A good idea is to do a brainstorm or make a vision board that encapsulates what this ‘dream life’ would entail. This will get your creative juices flowing, and remember: the sky’s the limit!
3) Your career means something to you
If you hate your job, you’re most likely not on the right path in life.
However, there are exceptions. Sometimes we work in roles we don’t enjoy because of the pay. Or obligation – we might be feeding more mouths than our own. We could be saving up for something important.
Other times, we might be working in an industry that we used to enjoy, but have found that we just…don’t anymore. This is only natural.
As long as you stay in touch with how you feel about your work, you’ll be able to make a conscious, inspired decision on what to do next. You should aim towards spending every day as intentionally as possible, to get the most out of what you do. Always remember the end goal.
Remember: you don’t need to have just one career in life. Some of the most successful people in the world began entirely different careers in their middle ages.
4) You’re appreciated
The satisfaction we derive from life doesn’t always come from happiness. Moments of pleasure are obviously…well, pleasant – but they can still leave us in a state of want.
Satisfaction often comes from meaning. When we feel like our presence here on the planet is meaningful, we feel more connected to our communities, like we have a reason to be here.
So are you giving back to your community? Do you feel like your life has a genuinely positive impact on those around you? And if not, what can you do to inspire that change within yourself?
If the people in your life appreciate who you are and what you do for them, you can be pretty confident that you’re on the right track in life!
5) You’re looking forward to something
You can get the house. The car. The partner. The job.
Whatever it is, you still might feel that gnawing ache for something more.
So, what is that? Well – it’s human nature.
We’re geared to crave positive chemicals in our brains, like dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin – rewards for getting what we want (and need) in life.
If you’re planning things to look forward to in life, you’re satisfying your deep-seated neurological desires for kicking goals. You’re keeping yourself happy and motivated.
So why not book a holiday this year? You probably deserve it!
6) You’re looking after yourself
The easiest way to check in with ourselves is to take a look at the way we’re treating ourselves.
Are you eating in a way that best supports your body and mind? Or are you engaging in bad habits or addictions that are getting in the way of you living your best life?
Wherever you’re at with your physical and mental health, it’s always important to remember that you’re not alone. If you’ve been feeling less than spectacular lately, it could be time to visit a professional.
Life can throw us a hardball or two, but it’s also for enjoying.
And it’s impossible to live the life you truly desire, without giving it your very best shot!
So do yourself a favour and check in today.
